Our goal is to provide the best possible Police, Fire, and Emergency Medical Services to the Sunnyvale community. We accomplish this by employing bright, energetic, and committed Public Safety Officers and support staff.
Our recruiting efforts focus on attracting people who want to serve others and who are willing to take on the challenge of “three tough careers.” We especially look for great attitudes in candidates who wish to join our ranks, and we accept nothing less. As you begin testing to become a Sunnyvale Public Safety Officer, you will see that our standards are high, and that we accept only the top tier of qualified applicants into our training program. Our testing process can be quite lengthy; we want be certain each candidate has good judgment, superior decision making skills, and possesses a keen ability to communicate well – both orally and in written form. If you prove yourself during our testing, we will conduct a thorough investigation into your background to ensure you have the uncompromising integrity that will withstand public scrutiny and will build the trust of those we serve.
If you are selected to be a part of the Public Safety Team, we will provide you fundamental training in police, fire and emergency medical services. We understand the value of teaching, skill building, and coaching. Your initial training is tough and rigorous – it lasts almost 14 months. During that time, we will help you build the confidence to apply your training to real life situations that require decisiveness, care and compassion as you begin your service to the Sunnyvale community. You will quickly develop the pride that is the cornerstone of the Department of Public Safety. As a Sunnyvale Public Safety Officer, you will be part of a select team of men and women who thrive on solving problems and resolving issues.
Much of our success in delivering quality police, fire, and emergency medical services can be attributed to the constant challenges officers face during their careers. You will have opportunities ranging from police patrol, to firefighting, to detective work, to working with the youth in our schools. The challenge is to keep our officers sharp, confident, and proud as they answer the many and frequent calls for help. Our community members depend on the Department of Public Safety to keep them safe, and to ensure a high quality of life in our city. Our success, however, depends on each officer rising to the challenges and being willing to provide great service with every call.
